Not every garage door problem is an emergency, and paying after-hours rates for something that can wait until Tuesday is a waste of money. But some failures leave your home unsecured or someone’s car trapped, and those genuinely cannot wait.
Here is the honest dividing line.
Call tonight
The door is stuck open
This is the clearest one. An open garage is an open door to your house, and in most Tucson homes the garage connects directly to the interior. It also exposes everything stored in there, and during monsoon it lets in wind, water and dust.
The door is off its track or hanging crooked
An unstable door can fall. If children, pets or vehicles are anywhere nearby, this is not a wait-until-morning situation. See off-track repair.
A broken spring with a car trapped inside
If you need the vehicle for work in the morning, or there is a medical or family reason you cannot lose access, this becomes urgent. See spring repair.
Storm damage that compromised the door
Monsoon nights are our busiest. A bent, blown-in or partially detached door after a microburst is both a security and a safety problem.
The door closed on something, or someone
If auto-reverse failed, that door must not be used again until the safety system is fixed. This is the most important item on this list.
A commercial door blocking operations
A stuck warehouse or dock door stops the business. See commercial repair.
This can usually wait until morning
- The door is closed and secure but will not open, and you can get your vehicle out another way or do without it
- Noise, squeaking or grinding with the door still operating normally
- Remote not working when the wall button still does
- Cosmetic damage with no effect on operation
- Slow or slightly rough travel with no other symptoms
Waiting saves you money and gets the same repair.
What to do while you wait
If the door is stuck open
- Move vehicles out and take valuables inside if you can do so safely
- Lock the interior door between the garage and the house — often overlooked, and it is the one that matters
- Turn on exterior lighting
- Do not leave the house unattended if avoidable
If the door is stuck closed with a car inside
Pull the emergency release cord — the red handle hanging from the opener rail — with the door fully closed. That disconnects the opener so the door can be operated manually. If the springs are broken, the door will be extremely heavy and you should not try to force it.
What not to do
- Do not keep pressing the remote hoping it catches. Repeated attempts damage the opener and worsen mechanical failures.
- Do not pull the emergency release on a door stuck partly open. It can drop.
- Do not attempt spring or cable work at night in a hot garage. This is where injuries happen.
- Do not prop the door with anything and call it secured.
